 Best Chicken Thigh Recipe – Hoisin Chicken

 

Even though I call this recipe hoisin chicken, it’s a little bit more than just hoisin sauce. It kind of tastes like a sweeter version of bourbon chicken, maybe. I can’t really explain other than saying it’s damn good. Especially with rice.

 

What you need to make the best chicken thigh recipe:

  • Hoisin Sauce
  • Honey
  • Brown Sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Water
  • Frying Pan
  • 2-3 pounds of chicken ( I prefer thighs, you can use any cut you like breast, wings, tenderloins)

Hoisin Sauce

 

Never heard of hoisin sauce?  It’s used in Chinese cooking on meats, seafood, and stir fry… by itself, it has a semi-sweet, salty, strong flavor like nothing else.

It’s sometimes hard to find. If you do not have a Chinese grocer it can be found at large grocery retailers or I found it online for a few dollars here.

 

To Make the Sauce

 

Mix all ingredients in a bowl.

  • 1/4 cup of:
    • Hoisin Sauce
    •  Honey
    • Water
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tsp brown sugar

 

I used chicken thighs in this recipe. Not only are the thighs my favorite cut of chicken they’re also the cheapest.  It’s dark meat so it doesn’t dry out like the breast does and pretty foolproof when cooking.

If you like chicken breast or tenderloins you can use this as a marinade before cooking. Cinnamon helps to tenderize meat and they will be juicier. Do not overcook chicken breast or it will dry out and be tough.

 

Directions:

 

Add chicken and sauce to a warm pan and simmer uncovered. Flip a few times throughout cooking.

For the large thighs I used, it takes about 60 min. You want the chicken thoroughly cooked, use a meat thermometer to measure the temp according to the cut of meat you used. For tenderloins, breast, and thighs the temp needs to be 165˚F (74˚C).  Check the thighs near the bone and the breast and tenderloins in the thickest part.

I have not used this thermometer but it has awesome reviews. It’s the one I plan on getting if my grandmother’s old one ever craps out.

Ingredients
  • You will need 1/4 cup of:
  • Hoisin Sauce
  • honey
  • water
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tsp brown sugar
Directions
  • Step 1 Mix ingredients for the sauce together.
  • Step 2 Add sauce and chicken to a frying pan.
  • Step 3 Bring the sauce to a boil then turn down to simmer for the remaining time.
  • Step 4 Flip the chicken a few times throughout cooking.
  • Step 5 Cook until the chicken is thoroughly heated to 165 degrees.
